Renal injury continues to be one of the major safety findings in preclinical animal studies as well as in later clinical studies and even post-marketing. This talk will focus on proximal tubule functions and the important role that drug transporters play in mediating renal clearance and toxicity. Current biomarker panels for detection of renal injury will be discussed. Finally, available cell models for the study of kidney injury will be reviewed, including recent 3D and organ-on-chip models.
